Remote Controls are electronic devices used for operating a machine from a distance. These are actually consumer IR devices that issue commands so as to operate televisions, stereo systems and DVD players from distance. These are small handheld wireless equipment that has an array of buttons so as to adjust various settings like volume, television channel and track number. Now day’s they have become so much popular that the pioneer of machines attaches a free remote with the device as the machine has only handful of essential primary control buttons whereas remote contains all the function controls. These remotes communicate with the electronic devices by either infrared signals or radio signals. The remote controls are powered by small AAA or AA size batteries.
Technique
Remote controls have some unique codes that transmit to receiving device and that machine recognizes it and decodes the code to operate and perform its function desired. The remote controls for electronic appliances have an infrared diode that emits a light beam which is picked up by the sensors on the receiving device. In single channel remote control the carrier signal triggers the function whereas the multi-channel remote controls have modulating carriers for signals of different frequency. Then the signals are demodulated by frequency filters in remote control. This way the remote control operates the electronic device.
Usage
Earlier the Video game consoles had no wireless controllers or if had then made by the third party but these remotes also, had transmission delays so these become virtual useless. But now current generation Xbox gaming consoles have standard wireless controllers. Now kids play with remote control toys like racing cars, boats and aircraft.
Even people of all ages love to fly Remote controlled planes as one can experience the fun of flying planes that too with controls in their hands.
The Remote control technology is also used for controlling vehicles for space travel from ground. But as the distance increases while going in space so the direct remote control of space vehicles is not do practical due to signal delay.
The car locks are also controlled by remotes and it helps in operating the car lock from distance. Remote control is used in different industries for controlling pump storage power stations, substations and HVDC-plants. The remote control even prevents damage of human health as remote operated robots are used in toxic and radioactive environments so as to avoid causalities. Even during war also boats are controlled by remote from a shore station and like that tanks and planes are also operated by remotes from bunkers.

There are also Universal remote controls that drive by complex software which can operate every electronic device in the house like security alarm system, MP3 music system, television and even lights. There are different companies that offer various models of remote controlled cameras like Samsung and canon. Often people like small remote size as it’s easily to handle and can be placed in pocket.
